norelem partners with University of Hertfordshire for Engineering Fundamentals module
The University of Hertfordshire’s School of Engineering and Technology has pioneered a new first year module entitled “Engineering Fundamentals” for is first year engineering students.
The module was developed following feedback from industry and students, allowing students to benefit from an introductory module providing hands on skills with basic engineering components such as bearings, transmissions or fasteners.
While this topic might not be new, the method of delivery is: students are provided with online lectures and subject specific reading material. Additionally, instead of traditional lectures, students spend their “lecture” time working with the actual parts in practical sessions in tasks designed to enhance their learning. Occasional guest lectures from industry speakers on a variety of topics were also held.
A key to the success of this module has been having the physical components for the practical sessions. Various industrial companies donated equipment and norelem was very supportive of this module, supplying a multitude of components, upon which many of the practical sessions were based. norelem also provided a guest lecture on engineering components.
“The generosity of norelem and other companies has made a significant impact on the success of this module and we look forward to continued support from our industrial friends” said Thomas Baker, the module lecturer.
