norelem and Cadenas selects the 2015 Engineering Newcomer

Cutlery wrapping machine machine impresses the panel of experts
A skills shortage is an ever-growing concern for the industry. One means of fostering young talent is the Engineering Newcomer Challenge, which was held this year for the second time. At the Motek trade fair in Stuttgart, Germany, a panel of experts announced the winner from a large selection of promising entries.
The Engineering Newcomer Challenge 2015 gave school and university students the opportunity to submit a project or paper produced as part of their degree or studies in the field of engineering and development. It was not just the prize money that attracted participants to take part in challenge, this award also improves career opportunities and generates a lot of recognition for the projects. "Junior staff are becoming rarer and rarer. That's why it's particularly important to encourage them in this competition," explains Marcus Schneck, panel member and managing director of norelem, at the award ceremony.
"Working with young people has always been an important aspect in the development of CADENAS. We work with them to analyse new, fresh ideas and this allows us to get input for our product development," said Jürgen Heimbach, managing director of the software developer CADENAS and panel member. "That's why we've worked with norelem to bring about this annual competition, so that we can recognise important trends at an early stage."
The entries were judged against the following criteria:

Is the design a completely new development or does it use existing technologies?

Practical value/technological benefit/market opportunities:
How would this project be used in practice? Does it improve the work process and, crucially, is there a market for this product?

Use of standards/purchased parts/cost consideration/variability:
Have pre-existing parts been used and is standardisation possible?

The winners of the 2015 Engineering Newcomer Challenge

1st prize was awarded to Andreas Huber and Albin Wolfersberger from HTBLuVA (Higher Technical Institute) Salzburg with their project "Developing, calculating and building a cutlery wrapping machine (original German title: Entwicklung, Berechnung und Konstruktion einer Besteckeinwickelmaschine)". This device is capable of wrapping forks, knives and napkins into a package. The prize for the winning team, which invested over 800 hours into the project in their spare time, was 2000 euros.

Philipp Werner and Daniel Kröner from the Grundig Akademie (Grundig academy) in Nuremberg, Germany, took 2nd place with their project about the "ExHum exploration robot" (original German title: Erkundungsroboter ExHum). Their project documents the development, design and building of a remote-control exploration robot with a gripper arm and a camera. The prize for 2nd place was 1000 euros.

Bastian Wanger, Julia Lößl and Paul Krecu from the Technikerschule Allgäu (technical school) in Kempten, Germany, impressed the judges with their "Aquascooter" construction project, which was part of their 2-year training as mechanical engineering technicians. They developed a transport machine for people and goods that can swim and dive. The winners of third place were awarded 500 euros.
