Construction of a lighting system

Individual and flexible lighting system

The two students, Constanze and David Schmitt who attend the study course camera at the Deutschen Film- und Fernsehakademie in Berlin have examined the construction of a lighting system for their own film shooting during their final year project. The design is a light bulb based, multifaceted applicable lighting system. Furthermore, the system should be easy to handle and construct.
For the construction, the students wired aluminium profiles and fitted them with sockets for light bulbs and fluorescent tubes (pictures 1 and 2). Using connectors, the profiles can be combined to various forms allowing, for instance long rows or squares of different sizes to be built (picture 3). A cloth (black or white molleton) can be hanged from the profiles using press studs. This allows the light which e.g. shines on a wall to be reduced and regulated (picture 4).
Additionally, the students constructed boxes from twin-wall sheets with different sized frames (picture 5). 8 different fabrics can be stretched over these frames and fastened with press studs (picture 6). Customised floor cloths also allow reflected light from the floor to be controlled. For instance, if there is a red floor in a scene, the reflected light from the floor would give the actors face a light red cast. Using a floor cloth (black or white) the reflection from below can be removed (black cloth) or (white cloth) increased without colour cast (picture 7).
