Development of a 3-axis CNC-operated plasma cutter

At the Munich University, a CNC-operated plasma cutter was developed that can cut sheet steel and steel plates of varying thicknesses.
At the Munich University, a CNC-operated plasma cutter was developed that can cut sheet steel and steel plates of varying thicknesses.
A project group in the 6th semester of the mechatronics programme at Munich University optimised and developed an existing plasma cutter. The CNC plasma cutter is used in the laboratory for manufacturing technology and industrial engineering at the university as a demonstration piece and for cutting materials for future projects.
The table includes a 3-axis CNC controller designed for a working area measuring 1000 x 1000 x 200 mm and for cutting materials between 1 and 20 mm thick. The machine is powered by stepper motors which traverse the axes via toothed belts (X and Y-axis) and a spindle (Z-axis).
