STEAM 2000: Solar thermal desalination plant for seawater
The Solar Team of DHBW Heidenheim - University of Cooperative Education developed STEAM 2000 to produce drinking water by purifying sea water. STEAM 2000 allows sea water desalination, which is not expensive and complex. This is an important contribution to secure future generation drinking water.
STEAM 2000 is a decentralised, self-sufficient and financially sustainable small-scale plant for seawater desalination, which uses solar energy to desalinate sea water. When introduced in a solar mirror, it purifies by evaporation and condensation of water.
Salt water, controlled by a flow regulator, flows into STEAM 2000 down to the evaporator module that heats the water. The evaporator module has an optimised surface for nucleate boiling. The levels are regulated by means of measuring points. The rising steam passes through the preheater module. This is also responsible for pre-heating the incoming water. It is constructed with a J-tube having siphon effect.
The condenser module is responsible for condensation and simultaneous preheating. This module can used many times. Vapour condenses again inside the cover module.
The 160 mm x 320 mm large STEAM 2000 with 2 modules produces 450 ml of drinking water in 30 minutes.
