Project Leonardo of the University of Applied Sciences Bielefeld

Students work up models adapted from sketches by Leonardo da Vinci

Project Leonardo has endured in the Product Development/Mechatronics branch of study at the University of Applied Sciences Bielefeld since 2004. Following the motto "comprehension by grasping" students produce models adapted from sketches by Leonardo da Vinci involving lots of enthusiasm, zeal and major dedication.
In the course of this the students study the unique correlation of art, history and technology. There are no limits set for them on the implementation of their ideas - thinking outside the box is in fact expressly desired. As a result these engineers of tomorrow learn how to devote themselves to their visions later in their professional life, to make them a reality and to actively help shape the future. CAD data, computer simulations and other technical methods are available to them over the course of the implementation as well. Practical applicability, functional capability and operational reliability play a central role in the development process due to the fact that the models have to be prepared for long, active use in exhibits.
Because the projects are presented to the general public at the »Leonardo da Vinci – moving inventions« exhibition as well. The current 102 models have been loaned or rented and touring through German and European museums with great success since 2007. . At the interactive exposition visitors have the occasion to take in and to experience Leonardo's technical contrivances.
Since all exhibition models are meant to be handled and moved, visitors are able to consider the ideas, functions and distinctive technical features from every angle and explore them individually. By reference to Leonardo's original sketch which is placed alongside the model visitors can understand the basic concept that the students had at their disposal for their research and its implementation.
